The most important thing is to acknowledge what Zentangle is and where it comes from and you’ll find many of the certified Zentangle teachers share the same information about this. You can find more on the official Zentangle.com website too but here is my potted take on how it came into being, plus a few of Rick and Maria’s own words.

Inspired by watching his wife, a calligrapher, Maria Thomas, Rick Roberts, a former Buddhist monk, noticed that when illustrating some of her calligraphy, Maria would enter a trance-like state whilst drawing simple repetitive patterns. This was different from the concentration shown when she was writing. Maria confirmed that indeed, she was deeply relaxed when she drew the patterns. Between them, they began to list and formalise simple line-strokes, many of them familiar to doodlers, into named patterns that can be used to fill a simple outline, then shaded in pencil, resulting in a little work of art that appears to be much more complicated that it is in practice.

And what it is –

Zentangle is an easy to learn method of creating beautiful images from repetitive patterns. It is a fascinating new art form that is fun and relaxing. It increases focus and creativity. Zentangle provides artistic satisfaction and an increased sense of personal well being.

I began learning Zentangle when I found by happy accident in 2013. Since then, I have given Zentangle Inspired classes and workshops in the small Spanish town I call my home. Inspired by the results and the interest, I made the big decision to open a studio – together with a yoga teacher friend – where I now offer classes of art for people of all ages and abilities. All of which is directly attributable to my chance encounter via the internet with Rick and Maria. So inspired that I funded myself to go to the States and take the official teaching course with them in June 2018. I doubt that anyone could have been more delighted with themselves and the experience than I was and I now proudly show my credentials in the studio. I particularly like this:
